From Purpose to Leading

A story by Dave Westgarth – 17 July 2025
Certified Better Scrum Practitioner

A few words first

Dave joined a Better Scrum cohort in 2023 with the BSP Exam, and became a Certified Better Scrum Practitioner easily on his first attempt 2 years ago.

To understand better Dave’s undeniable strength, we asked him a few questions to understand his perspective. Dave replied promptly to 5 questions, here is the log of what he had to say.

Purpose

Q. How would you describe what made you take the journey to become a Certified BSP?

“I found myself wanting to go deeper beyond process and frameworks into why we work the way we do”

I’ve always been passionate about creating meaningful impact through scrum, but I found myself wanting to go deeper beyond process and frameworks into why we work the way we do. The Certified BSP (Better Scrum Practitioner) journey stood out because it focused on grounding practice in purpose, principles, and values. It felt like the right kind of challenge that would stretch me to reflect, not just tick a box.

Intentional

Q. What have you learned about yourself?

“It’s made me more mindful, more intentional, and more comfortable with ambiguity”

This journey helped me recognize when I was defaulting to certainty over curiosity. It’s made me more mindful, more intentional, and more comfortable with ambiguity something that’s critical in any leadership or coaching role.

Autonomy

Q. What specific part of Better Scrum enabled you to learn about yourself?

“Helped me see where I could be limiting my teams by clinging to structure”

What really stood out was how much it goes beyond the mechanics of Scrum. The module on Scrum Theory and Values was a turning point for me. It wasn’t just about understanding events and artifacts, but about exploring empiricism in action, psychological safety, and team dynamics at a deeper level.

The section on “Beyond the Mechanics” especially helped me to reflect on how I was applying Scrum not just what I was doing. Discussions on self-management, Lean thinking, and the flow of values helped me see where I could be limiting my teams by clinging to structure instead of enabling purpose and autonomy.

Collaboration

Q. How has Better Scrum helped you in the workplace?

“I’ve been able to help teams reconnect with their purpose and values, and that shift alone has unlocked better collaboration”

It’s given me language and strategies to guide healthier team dynamics. I’ve been able to help teams reconnect with their purpose and values, and that shift alone has unlocked better collaboration, more aligned decision-making, and more resilience during change or pressure.

Leading

Q. What is different for you now that you have mastered purpose, principles and values?

“It’s changed how I lead, how I listen, and how I serve”

I’m far less attached to roles, titles, or frameworks and far more focused on intentional impact. Whether I’m acting as a Scrum Master, Delivery Lead, or coach, I now show up anchored in values. That clarity not only helps me stay grounded, but it also invites others to do the same. It’s changed how I lead, how I listen, and how I serve.

Dave is definitely confidently driving teams with Purpose, Principles and Values.

Sincere congratulations Dave!
